Helen Anna Flanagan is an artist working across video, installation, performance and writing. She looks to investigate social structures and the political subtext of the everyday, focusing on affect and emotions, labour and the body. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, CENTRALE for Contemporary Art, IKOB Museum of Contemporary Art, M HKAÂ Museum of Contemporary Art, Ballon Rouge Gallery, GMK Gallery, V2_ Lab for Unstable Media, Museum M, Focal Point Gallery, Aspex Gallery, Kunsthal Gent, bb15, IMAI, Netwerk Aalst, MOMA Odessa, Showroom MAMA, TENT, among others.
Her films have been presented at international festivals such as IFFR (NL), Sharjah Film Platform (AE), Lo Schermo Dell’arte Film Festival (IT), Go Short (NL), Proyector Plataforma de Videoarte (SP), B3 Biennial of the Moving Image (DE), Aesthetica (UK), Art Rotterdam (NL), MIX NYC (US), CIFF (CW), Anafi (GR), among others.
Flanagan is a laureate from HISK (2019-2021) and a former resident at FACT Liverpool, Hospitalfield, IBB Curacao, VISIO-European Programme on Artists’ Moving Images, Izolyatsia Platform for Cultural Initiatives, Forum Stadtpark and METAL. She will be artist in residence at International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York in Autumn 2025. Her work has been awarded the IKOB Feminist Art Prize (2019), the VISIO Young Talent Acquisition Prize (2020) a fellowship with Needcompany (2021), and the second prize of Art Contest Brussels (2021).
Flanagan’s practice is currently supported by the Stipendium for Established Artists from the Mondriaan Fund and her projects have been supported by the Nederlands Filmfonds, Stimuleringsfonds, Stichting Niemeijer Fonds, CBK Rotterdam and Gemeente Rotterdam.
